All good things must come to an end…so we decided to close 2018 with a bang!

Music wise it’s been an amazing year, we attended many spectacular events and had the chance to interview a lot of artists;

As last interview of 2018, we wanna drag you down the rabbit hole, let’s follow us to one of the most iconic parties of the year, Grotesque 350, hosted by the dutch mastermind, RAM, who’s been so nice to sit down with us for a great chat!

TBA: Hi RAM, thanks again for supporting The Backstage Access, first of all, how was your 2018?

RAM: It’s been an amazing year, my best year so far, so I can’t complain, had load of music released, tunes and cds,  got a lot of sold out shows worldwide, been touring non stop, so it’s been just fantastic

TBA: Speaking of 2018 what has been your track of the year?

RAM: Northern Star from me and Susana, you know, I make music that I love and unfortunately tune like that are emotional trance that are not so hot anymore, so you don’t get to listen to it so often, I missed that very much as to me this was the essence of trance; another tune I love is from my friend Richard Durand ‘The Air I Breath‘, I think it’s an amazing track.

TBA: Speaking about Northern Star, can you tell us the story behind it?

RAM: Well it’s basically my third collaboration with Susana, we started with RAMelia and then we made ‘Someone Like You’ and after two tracks like that and fans keep asking for a new collaboration we really wanted to do something special again…but you know, it’s difficult to overcome what we did or at least to do something at the same level so it took a lot of work and it was a very hard process but now we made it and we are both very happy with the result, it’s nice to see we get so much love and support for it.

TBA: What’s up next?

RAM: Well basically after this, (Grotesque350) we gonna take this show worldwide, we are off to Asia, Australia, U.S.A and South America, we gonna do shows over there and in Europe as well of course, our label is doing amazing too and we will release a new compilation, and we are also about to start Grotesque D, with more progressive house!

About my personal projects I’d say I like to think out of the box so I am working on  a new project to show a darker and harder side of me, I came form the hard trance so, basically I wanna make a fusion of different style reworking all hard trance classics, something different form what I normally do.

TBA: I’ve seen something coming up like a show at Paradiso, right?

RAM: Yes basically I wanna do a show for the essence of trance which basically means for me the essential trance records of the last 15/20 years but like the emotional beautiful trance, the kind of pure trance which is unfortunately not played anymore, emotional melodic trance for true trance lovers so it’s gonna be a 5 hours show of what I call angelic emotional trance, not for people that like fashion trance.

TBA: So we are at Grotesque 350 and the anthem is ‘Youniverse’ your collaboration with Alex M.O.R.P.H. how did it come?

RAM: I’ve known Alex for such a long time and we did already a previous collab, and I thought it was the right choice to work with him on the anthem of the event as he is playing here too and on the cd as well… it was for me a logic choice to ask him for it.

TBA: Any other collabs coming up in 2019?

RAM: Yes a lot!! I think the first one is with Heatbeats, one with Natalie Gioia and Darren Porter… then one with Arctic Moon and Denise Riviera,… Julie Thompson, Christina Novelli…. loads are coming cause I am also working on a new album so I think in the album there will be about six or seven collaborations but i cannot spill the bean now otherwise there is no surprise anymore haha!

TBA : Last but not least, as a guy from Amsterdam, why did you choose to set Grotesque in Rotterdam?

RAM: Ah, because there is no Maassilo in Amsterdam haha , but seriously, basically for me this is the best location in Holland I love it here, I think it’s beautiful and even if we love Amsterdam we don’t have a location that fits good as this one.

Special thanks to Ross for doing this interview 🙂

You want it pure, unmodified and exactly as the original artist intended it?! Well this time you’ll need to look elsewhere! This September the good folk at Grotesque stand ready to toot the horn of all things ‘remix’ once again!

With an airtight game plan, ‘Grotesque Reworked & Remixed 2’ serves you one mix of the best of the best from trance’s freshly released & remixed crop, whilst the other cliff-dives into the archives to rework some of the genre’s classier classics. Over 230 minutes, the release has a posse of on-point remixers to hand, with Alex M.O.R.P.H., Ferry Tayle, Jordan Suckley, Sneijder, Robert Nickson, Roger Shah just some of those flexing their remix-muscles. They’ve had a starry cast of legends to work on too, with productions from Tiësto & Armin, Aly & Fila, Ferry Corsten, Gabriel & Dresden, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Andy Moor and Lange among those coming under the remix laser.

Having handled Volume 1’s duties solo, Master of Grotesque ceremonies RAM shakes up the album system some. For its second outing he’s drafted in head of Grotesque A&R Daniel Skyver to co-mix the edition. With RAM’s focusing on the ‘now’ and Daniel on the ‘then’, between them they’ve delivered a mixcomp that’s as big a salute to the time honoured trance remix as you’ll hear this year!

On his mix Daniel has dug deeper into the crates to focus on still remix-fresh trance heritage. A ‘Café Del Mar’/‘Greece 2000’/’1998’-rerun this is not! Over its opening half you’ll hear reworks like Ruddaz’smuch-champed take on Coast 2 Coast’s ‘Home’, Roger Shah’s reimagining of ‘Somewhere Inside’ from Allure & Julie Thompson and Alex M.O.R.P.H. uptick of Kamaya Painters’ ‘Wasteland’. Further in Joy Kitikonti’s ‘Joyenergizer’ gets a lightning bolt retouch from 2nd Phase, Armin & Tiësto Pres. Major League’s ‘Wonder?’ dazzlingly comes to the remix attentions of that man Jordan Suckley and Indecent Noise overhauls DJ Wag’s Overdose classic ‘Man On The Moon’. Bringing his disc to an adrenaline-charged conclusion, Daniel lines up David Forbes’ fresh-off-the-desk remix of Hennes & Cold’s ‘The Second Trip’, while the mix and heads to the dawn with Binary Finary’s elevating spin on Mauro Picotto’s ‘Komodo’.

On Vol. 2, RAM’s tasked himself with handling the cherry-pick of 2018’s remixes and in the search has left no stone unturned. He frontends’ the mix with Robert Nickson reshaping of Giuseppe Ottaviani & Christian Burns ‘Brightheart’, Sneijder’s restoration of Lustral’s ‘Everytime’ and the Ciaran McAuley refit of Aly & Fila/Ferry Corsten collab ‘Camellia’. As the mix crosses over into its second – even more uplifting – phase, RAM spikes the punch with some reworks of his own material. ‘Forever And A Day’ and ‘Circle Of Life’ feature in their Allen Watts and Amir Hussain reinterpretations, while his and Mark Sherry ‘Nordic Nights’ gets hit by a Darren Porter rebuild. He reaches its final apex with Dan Stone’s remix of Aly & Fila’s ‘We Control The Sunlight’, Davey Asprey’s ‘Sunbreaker’ and HP Source’s H.P Lovecraft-esque take of Sneijder’s ‘Neutralize’.

Remix fun for the whole (trance) family, ‘Grotesque Reworked & Remixed 2’ is the release you need to launch your 2018 clubbing autumn the right way. Full tracklist details below, and the album’s available to pre-stream/purchase via this link now: https://reworked.choons.at/remixed2

There’s many a weight, mean and measure to test whether our Spring season’s finally, finally sprung. None are a more accurate bellwether though than the ever-reliable arrival of RAM’s ‘Spring Essentials’ selection. Right on cue 2018’s edition’s landed and it’s every bit as fresh of tune, audacious of mix and brilliantly Grotesque of nature as you’d imagine!

Seconded in 2018 to this most noble of endeavours are Scottish duo 2nd Phase. Collectively RAM, Stuart and Gary have assembled and mixed a 30+ collection of tracks that’ll blaze the trail into those longer days and later nights.

What do our mix trio have in store for you then? Well naturally you’ll find the latest from trance’s most established and dependable names. Releases and remixes from the studios of Ferry Corsten, Solarstone, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Mark Sherry, Richard Durand, Jordan Suckley (to mention but a handful) abound.

Younger guns are in with an equal crack of the whip too, as DIM3NSION, Skylex, Future Disciple, Lostly, Alex Di Stefano, Cold Blue and a whole host of others contribute their latest to this new-season-hailing opus.

Heaven forbid you go underserved by the mixers’ own oeuvre either! Marco V’s remix of RAM/Darren Porter collaboration ‘The Calling’ and Daniel Skyver’s elevating take on the classic ‘RAMore’ are quick to the Dutchman’s laser. As is ‘Serengeti’- RAM’s floor-fuelling 2018 studio team-up with Ciaran McAuley. Over on the second mix meanwhile, 2nd Phase rewire of Jordan Suckley & Kutski’s ‘Surveillance’ works up a mid-set storm, as does the lads’ ‘Midsummer Mushroom’ and ‘Hot Sauce’ club smashes.

RAM – Africa

Our beloved Grotesque mastermind is back at it with one of his stellar productions.

RAM returns to Armada for another release on ‘Who’s Afraid Of 138’.

Combining groovy intro beats with grand, euphoric, trancy synths in the drop, ‘Africa’ is one to keep an eye on!

Check it out here

Following previous offering ‘RAMexico’, Trance powerhouse RAM draws inspiration from yet another part of the world to come up with this speaker-buster. Armed with a tribal-esque drum intro, energetic synth lashes and a killer melody, ‘Africa’ is bound to make the world go crazy.

Had it somehow escaped your attention, of late Grotesque has been in overdrive. Within just the last month alone the label side of RAM’s marque has notched up a hat-trick of Beatport #1s. Their events arm meanwhile have just brought word of a 2018 international expansion, with Grotesque shows confirmed to tour the States, Asia and Europe. On the mix-comp front, RAM is a man whose largesse likewise knows no limits!! Fresh off the back of last month’s killer ‘Reworked & Remixed’ outing, with ‘Grotesque 300’, he’s ready to formulate another mix-spectacular into December’s equation.

To celebrate the transmission of another 50 episodes of the Grotesque Radio Show, our trance troubadour again descended on Rotterdam’s historic Maassilo compound in early December. In tow were 5000 wildly up-for-it fans, and another unforgettable crowd-wowing night was the sure-fire outcome.

A CD ‘compadre’ to its milestone celebrations, ‘300’ delivers an all-dancing all-trancing Carnival of the Grotesque companion to your door! Heading up the mixes are tech-trance legend Marco V, the Grotesque kingpin himself, RAM and one of the scene’s most rapid risers in 2017Darren Porter. Over 31?2 hours and across 43 tracks, it brings the night’s highs back into the sharpest focus. The three spinners have compiled and mixed the best, most seismic, most ‘300’-capturing trance available into it!

Over its 3 discs, you’ll discover original productions & reworks from a host of the scene’s most illustrious names. A Mardi Gras of Ferry Corsten, Darren Tate vs Jono Grant, MaRLo, PureNRG, Talla 2XLC, Stoneface & Terminal and Sean Tyas are but a handful of those involved. There’s an abundance from the newer names too, with the latest studio-weapons featured from ReOrder, Shugz, Lostly, The Noble Six, Ikorus, Dark Monks, Daniel Skyver and heaps more besides. Leaving their own inimitable marks on the discs too you can count on plenty from the production houses of Marco, Darren and RAM too.

So prepare for a fast flashback to that ‘Cirque du Trance’: Grotesque 300. The album is available online, through physical stores and via streaming sites now here: https://grotesque.choons.at/300

RAM releases new single “Melbourne” dedicated to Australia

Grotesque head-honcho RAM dedicates his latest anthem “Melbourne” to Australia!

A smashing infusion of powerful beats, fast and hard as only a festival anthem can be; boss label and heavy weight producer RAM dropped another bomb track. “Melbourne”, a monster forged to destroy every dance floor from now on with the most insane bass line and hard style synth line.

Bringing back the old-school, RAM is no stranger to the roots of trance music. Kicking his career off back in the 90s, the dutch producer has managed to fuse two different eras together, possibly starting off a new trend – hardstyle psy! Called “one of the hardest working DJs in the trance scene” by no other than Armin van Buuren, RAM premiered his latest single on A State of Trance episode 843 via an exclusive guest mix.

“Australia is definitely one of my favorite countries in the world with one of the best crowds! I absolutely love the mentality of the people, their way of leaving, their food & nature, it’s just a completely different world out there. There is not a single negative thing I could think of and I simply can not wait to go back there and experience it all over again.”

“Melbourne” is out now via all distribution portals.

Let’s grab it here

Following a numerous Beatport #1s this year, including his latest “The Calling” collaboration with Darren Porter, which is also Grotesque Indoor Festival’s official anthem, there is no doubt the flying dutch is one of the most influential and successful trance acts at present time. His label Grotesque delivers weekly releases via 3 different mediums, consistently taking room in the Top 100 for weeks ahead.
Celebrating the 300th episode of his Grotesque Radio Show, not only that RAM just hosted the biggest indoor trance event in Holland on December 9th, but also joined forces with trance legend Marco V & upcoming star Darren Porter in the release of the latest Grotesque 300 Compilation.

On Saturday December 9th, PT Events brings a spectacular American Mardi Gras show to Rotterdam’s Maassilo for what is the 8th edition of Grotesque Indoor Festival.

The courage to keep renewing and the willpower to continuously improve are key for the organization and the success of Grotesque events. “Often magic is created through small, simple acts. Those little striking moments make it all a night to remember”.

Grotesque Indoor Festival will be hosting 3 areas focused on Trance, Psy&Tech & House Classics. Aside of the stages, the Festival Market will make room for a special Silent Disco Party, for a complete sense stimulation experience. The uniquel Mardi Gras concept will play a significant role in the night, whereas production-wise nothing can be considered over-the-top.

“With new inspiration and last years positive responses, were planning to go a step further. Acrobatics, humor and sensation will be the main feeling and vibe in the three areas but also in the corridors, at the festival market or the lounge area! #GIF300 is more than the average club night!” – PTEvents.

Grotesque Indoor Festival is the largest indoor Trance event in The Netherlands. Focusing on production, special entertainment, artistry, theater-inspired elements and performers, it for sure makes it the most innovation and thought-of event in Western Europe.

The latest ASOT edition just amazed us all with its majestic show, the 800th episode’s celebration was absolutely insane, and we bet you are looking forward to the next edition already!!

Whether you were with us at Jaarbeurs during that incredible night or you were just spending a cozy night on your couch following the streaming, the main thing is we were all united for A State Of Trance, because it’s part of our lives and our stories and something we could not really live without.

It’s like the whole trance world is connected for a unique night, a one of a kind experience which aims to unite us all; ASOT means a lot to us, right? Well… we’ve had a chat with some of the artists performing there and  found out what ASOT means to them (and a lot of other interesting things which will follow asap in their interviews, during the next days)

Well the first time I was listening to ASOT, no, actually, let’s go way back, when I was 15 ,16 or something, I used to listen to ASOT radio show, and it kinda got me into producing music’s at some point I was actually releasing music on labels, and one of the first songs, was picked up by Armin van Buuren and he played it into ASOT so at some point I was listening to it and I heard my song and I was like: hang on, this is one of my songs, so…. Armin was playing my song!!! Can you imagine it?… Like the thrill, for me it was insane!
So that was my first experience and actually got hooked from that moment on. ASOT It’s really special for me, the music, the beats, trance means a lot to me.

Giuseppe:  It’s kinda of an institution, you know, one of those BIG things that have to be part of your life if you are a trance artist, you gotta play here
Richard: It’s like I milestone. If I was Armin I would end it at 1000 because it’s a really good number, if you get to 1000 then you get to do 10000 so that’s not possible ( but I am not gonna say that to Armin btw…- laughs-)

To me it means A lot of things. I think I’ve started producing my music because of it, back in 2004, I started listening to the radio show, and it really inspired me and I realized that I wanted to make tracks which Armin would have played, so it was like my dream, you know, right now I am here and the dream came true! So i’d say ASOT is a very important part of my career, my music position so yeah, it means a lot.

Rodg: For me, it kinda changed, you know, I’ve been playing here for the 3rd time, before that I was a visitor, it was about the music, you heard new music, a lot of productions, you know it was just an amazing festival, but now, I am here as a dj, playing the record I made in the studio is more about I am gathering people, bringing people together to enjoy music all together and especially for his event they come from all over the world, you see flags from countries you can’t even think of, that’s pretty special like, we, with our music bring these people together, that’s exactly what ASOT mean to me.

Ruben : I think the most important thing about ASOT is unifying, like bringing people together, the media are trying to divide everyone nowadays, try to scare people and make sure that everybody hates each other like you need to hate that person because he does that and so…I think with ASOT or with music in general we are trying to do something different, we are trying to bring people together so that a perfect example is when you see people with palestinian flag or israeli flag and they can dance together like they are here for the music not for any political reasons….that’s the most important thing about it,yeah I know it’s a bit deep but it is what it is 🙂

I think it’s already for years and years the biggest trance festival and it’s the party to be, it’s always something to look forward to, every time you get invited to play here, it’s like being a baby in a candy store! it’s awesome to be here, awesome crowd, everybody is so excited so it’s just very nice to play here!!

My very first ASOT was with my friends and I remember that I was in the car listening to the music and then I thought it was different from everything else  it was little bit magical, special, I love that everyone is different , everyone is loving the music, everyone is uniting and coming together to celebrate , there are a lot of other festival but this particular one is so nice and unique, I haven’t seen anything like this before.

It’s a building block for me as an artist, and for my productions, I mean a lot of people know me for my persona, my branding, but ASOT is very good for the exposure of my singles too Armin and Armada always supported my tracks and helped me get me to the point I am now,I love playing here because Armin brings everyone together and it’s a great festival.

It’ s a very exciting event to be, I meet all the trance family people , lot of people I work with…It may sounds like a cliché but trance is kinda a way of life for me , it’s part of my daily life.

When all is said and done, we do hope your ASOT experience has been great, and just stay tuned for the full interviews with each of these amazing artists!!

So… now we are curious, what does ASOT mean to YOU??
