EARS TO LEARN WITH RECORDS
“Glastonbury-based brothers, Todd and Guy, are changing the face of dance music”
Products of a musical background that saw brothers Todd and Guy Speakman exposed to a plethora of genres from an early age against the backdrop of Somerset’s rave scene, Speakman Sound return with their latest musical offering, the ‘LIMBIC’ EP; four tracks that epitomize the diversity of the duo and their influences.
“This EP is a turn in the road for us and features some huge talents. Our close friend Sharky brings her unique vocal onto a few tracks, rising star Deacon joins us in a brief diversion into rap on ‘Sleep’. ‘Curve’ touches on our love of jazz and ‘Via Lactea’ is all about dancing. We’re excited to release again, get people dancing to our music and plough on forward” – Speakman Sound
Hailing from Glastonbury, Speakman Sound have been meticulously crafting their organic approach to music ever since stepping into a studio together. After receiving a start-up grant from the Arts Council for a studio in North London, Speakman Sound have built an artistic hub from scratch, surrounding themselves with a creative coterie of musicians, artists and film makers. A place where they invite talented artists to practice, create and collaborate, as well as where the brothers hold regular late-night jams and parties. It’s from this creative hot bed of exciting talent where their label, Ears To Learn With Records was born.
Speakman Sound’s productions encompass elements stretching across the musical spectrum from U.K bass, deep rhythms and soulful vocal hooks, all fused together by their love of 60’s psychedelia and have garnered support from key industry tastemakers including Mixmag, Wonderland, CLASH, NOWNESS and Complex.
Arriving in 2017 with their debut single ‘In Flight’ which was hailed by BBC Radio 6’s Lauren Laverne as one of her tracks of the year, Speakman Sound’s discography has continued to grow. The ‘LIMBIC’ EP is released today and is a further showcase of Speakman Sound’s talent as one of underground music’s most intriguing rising acts.
Each of the four tracks on the ‘LIMBIC’ EP represent a musical pivot for Speakman Sound, yet still incorporating the trademark euphoria, infectious vocal hooks and production flourishes which have characterised their output to date. Lead single, ‘Via Lactea’ features the East London soulful vocals of NALAA and is designed for the dance floor; the track has been A-listed by Rinse FM and supported by Huw Stephens at Radio 1. ‘Sleep’ followed as the next single featuring rising UK rap star Deacon, with the track premiered and gaining high praise from Complex. The full EP release includes two new tracks which feature the vocal talents of regular collaborator Sharky, who has just released her own EP, ‘Fruit’, also produced by Speakman Sound and released on their label.
The ‘LIMBIC’ EP is also accompanied by a 5-minute cinematic film which has been directed by Boris Thompson-Rylance of Deadbeat Films. Already supported by NOWNESS, the video uses Speakman Sound’s music to explore the connection between the limbic system (the part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses) and western culture’s deep-rooted love for festivals and hedonism
“LIMBIC breaks down the conventional music video format and drifts through various scenes like a waking dream. From street protests in NYC to the hedonistic festival circuit, this music video is a euphoric trip on the senses.” – (NOWNESS)
Whether it be music for the dancefloor or productions for home listening to drift way with, ‘LIMBIC’ marks the next step of the deeply personal and passionate Speakman Sound project.
