MARKUS SCHULZ PRESENTS AFTERDARK VOL.1 // COLDHARBOUR BLACK BEGINS

Seasons, eh. One moment it’s all the light, bright and emotional summer height and then (with a swift, distinctly Schulzian rug-pull) we’re back to black! The Coldharbour Family’s bloodlines are getting mixed this fall, and with results most tonally dark & thrilling in nature. Legends both established & new are in the mix, with an incestuously interconnecting cabal of producers pulling the studio levers.

Wave goodbye to your comfort zone. Next stop Rabbit Hole: Level 5!

Your cast for the trip, well presiding, naturally, the darker arts master himself, Markus Schulz (and by natural extension Dakota). Also in the mix are trance immortal Jam El Mar and Gotham’s (alright Leeds’!) finest, Arkham Knights. The occasion: the bottle-break for Coldharbour’s new Black imprint, which, going forward, will quarter the most suspenseful and technofied offerings the label has to supply.

Born out of Global DJ Broadcast’s Afterdark show, the fourth edition of Markus’ annual winter-wave-in, aired last week. Premiering over the course were three new creations, that today form up as the ‘Afterdark Volume 1 EP’.

Markus Schulz & Jam El Mar – The Lotus: The second collective studio spawning (after ‘Hymn Of The Replicant’) from Markus & Jam this year, ‘The Lotus’ hastens ‘Afterdark’s arrival. It dials up the night with a drive-shaft inexorably turned by riding perc loops and open hi-hats. At its drop point there’s a sultry vocal intermission from a highly recognisable singer, before the black lightning of its doubly-Deutsch mainline splits the tree.

Markus Schulz pres. Dakota vs. Arkham Knights – Something About You: Where (you’re asking!) would a Coldharbour Black launch be without a Dakota submission?! Masks donned Markus enters the ring alongside Arkham Knights for ‘Something About You’. The trio pressurise the track with stalking drums and rimshot percussion, compressing moodier-yet frequencies in with its bassy prowl. Ethereally indistinct vocals swirl the waters deeper, before a few shafts of synth light finally release its Olympic-levels of tension.

Arkham Knights & Jam El Mar – Wake Up: linking up with Jam El Mar, Arkham Knights complete ‘Afterdark’s first circuit. The most tech-noir of the pack, ‘Wake Up’ thematically connects Frankfurt with the north of England. Staging industrial FX and mechanized drive against its prominent reverb-heavy percussive rhythms, its mainline surges, recedes, but keeps coming at you, and every time stronger than the last.

Music to lose yourself in, ‘Afterdark Vol 1’ paints the clearest of portraits of the coming sound of Coldharbour Black. You can pick it up here: https://coldharbour.choons.at/afterdarkvol1

PAUL VAN DYK – THE NEW ALBUM – ‘MUSIC RESCUES ME’ // NEW SINGLE w/ALEX M.O.R.P.H. – ‘VOYAGER’

You’ve had ‘Music Rescues Me’, the single. Last month we gave you Music Rescues Me’, the preview show (presented at London’s titan Printworks). We reckon appetites have been whetted enough.
Main event time.

‘Music Rescues Me’ – the album – is the ninth collection to be delivered by pioneering electronic musician, composer and performer, Paul van Dyk. Containing artistic collaborations with Alex M.O.R.P.H., Sue McLaren, Jordan Suckley, Plumb, Saad Ayub, Lostly and a host of other talents, December 7 will see its release.

Commenting on the album’s context, Paul says: “though it might have been its seed, this new album is not about music bringing one person back from the brink. Its theme reaches beyond that. This is about music’s ability to open us up, to stimulate mental imagery, to unlock or bring back memories. It’s about its often hard-to-fathom capacity to support us, to get us through our tougher or more challenging times, as well as soundtracking the good ones, and making them even better. This, to me, goes beyond the mere ‘inspirational’. This is something else. That music can ‘unlock’ us, allow us to access emotions and places our mind might not otherwise go to is nothing less than extraordinary. It’s both force and a gift. I feel that’s a big part of what keeps it so magical for me – indeed for all of us. So this album is a celebration of this most mysterious, impalpable and wonderful aspects of music’s nature”.

Not for nothing is ‘Music Rescues Me’ the most swiftly followed-up-on PvD long-player (just 14 months separate it and the release of ‘From Then On’ in 2017). If ever “do today” was Paul’s guiding principle in ‘98 or ‘08, it goes a dozen times over in 2018. Stimulus driven by his recuperation from the now-well-documented events of spring 2016 has had the profoundest of effects on van Dyk’s life-view. That has been expressed most clearly through his professional work, taking the form of a tap-wide-open creative stream. Telegraphing Paul’s developmental, progressing and to-the-future outlook, it’s one that’s echoed by the vibrant state of the music scene in which he operates.

For the album, a number of last year’s co-producers have been invited back to the studio with Paul. Alex M.O.R.P.H., James Cottle, Jordan Suckley and Tristan D (under his new Delta One guise) are some of those who’ve returned to Berlin to write follow-up tracks. With even deeper roots in the PvD universe, there are also vocal contributions from Sue McLaren (‘Lights’/’We Come Together’) and Plumb (‘I Don’t Deserve You’).

Equally though you’re going to be hearing co-productions with artists Paul’s in studio partnership with for the first time. “Alan Wyse, Steve Deekay, Saad Ayub, Rafael Osmo, Project 8, Lostly  these are musicians from around the world who, week-in, week-out, we see lighting up the VONYC forums, he says. The producers who’ve really risen in estimation for me. Sound-wise, each one has their own area and represents a different sub-style within our shared field. It’s these shades, grades & tones, meshed with my own, that open up a whole world of new musical angles for this, my ninth album”.

With the album primed for release December 2018, Paul offers a final reading on ‘
Music Rescues Me’s title. “The ‘Me’, he clarifies refers to ‘you, me, us – everyone’. ‘Rescue’ means less ‘save’, but more ‘liberate’ or ‘free’. My greatest aspiration for this release is that people – either now, or in years to come – listening to ‘Music Rescues Me will find that one of its tracks elevates, alleviates, opens them up, or takes them out of themselves. That’s the point at which I’ll consider it a success”.

Paul van Dyk’s ninth studio album ‘Music Rescues Me’ is released 07.12 and is available to pre-order here. (https://apple.co/2QBw2lb ). YouTube album preview also online here (https://youtu.be/XMAY9LEKIpc)

PAUL VAN DYK & ALEX M.O.R.P.H. – VOYAGER

‘We are dreamers. Soul searchers.
#Voyagers. We drift along, deep in thought, our minds craving exploration and our eyes telling tales of mysterious adventures’.
The latest joint venture from one of trancedom’s most dependable studio partnerships takes a look at life through a deeper, more philosophical lens this November.

Having bossed the Beatport trance chart with a record-breaking run on ‘We Are’, earlier this year Paul & Alex’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ reserved ‘From Then On’s best till last. Now, beating the expectation drum that bit louder for the arrival of the ‘Music Rescues Me’ album, the double Deutsch pairing reconvene on the profoundly atmospheric ‘Voyager’. Debuted as an ID during ‘MRM’s Printworks preview, Paul went on to hit Europe’s biggest trance room with the track, closing out his Transmission set – to the clear delight of 18,000+ fans – with ‘Voyager’.

The track itself, well if the above-mentioned singles took you to some special places, safe to say that ‘Voyager’s going to go way beyond. Paul & Alex build up its bass & drum resonance, before lighting up the thermals with shimmering, chiming sub-melody, plucked super-strings, zephyr-ish pads and air-spun piano notes. As the full reach of its irresistible siren-song harmony is felt, the pair gift ‘Voyager’ a heartfelt mainline, which ebulliently takes it to the heavens.

Helping you through the final days & hours before ‘Music Rescues Me’ drops in full, step aboard Paul & Alex’s ‘Voyager’ here, from today here. (https://apple.co/2QBw2lb )

SULTAN + SHEPARD PUT A SPELL ON LISTENERS WITH NEW ALBUM SINGLE: ‘WHERE ARE YOU?’ (FEAT. ANDREAS MOSS)

Canadian Grammy nominees Sultan + Shepard know what it takes to produce a top-quality hit record, and they might have just created their next one. Taken from their forthcoming debut album, ‘Where Are You’ merges Andreas Moss’ amazing vocals with Deep House-flavored vibes while offering a unique blend of pop-dance crossover magic that will prove irresistible both on and off the dance floor.

Listen to Sultan + Shepard feat. Andreas Moss – Where Are You?

Grammy nominees and frequent Beatport charters, Sultan + Shepard have collaborated with a range of top-tier artists, such as Tiësto, David Guetta, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Coldplay to name a few. As Canada’s well-known dance music force and one of the biggest duos in the industry, they effortlessly bridge the gap between dance music and pop, which landed them the Canadian songwriters SOCAN Music Award for International Song Of The Year in 2013 for ‘Bad’, the multi-platinum single they co-wrote alongside David Guetta, Showtek and VASSY. More recently, they spent six weeks atop the U.S. Mediabase Airplay chart and racked up a JUNO award nomination and over 20 million streams on Spotify to date for ‘Almost Home’ (with Nadia Ali). Now generating massive amounts of momentum with the subsequent release of album singles, they’re looking to cement their position at the very pinnacle of the dance music scene.

Born in Sweden, bred in Nashville and now based in Los Angeles, Andreas Moss lets his multicultural upbringing shine bright throughout his emotive, openhearted style of music. Over the years, the talented singer-songwriter appeared in Spotify’s Global Viral 50 playlist, New Music Friday, and Viral 50 playlist in many other countries, and clocked up millions of streams with his music, including popular single ‘Thinking About You’. It’s clear to see that Andreas Moss’ talent is going global and his work on ‘Where Are You?’ is bound to accelerate his rise to stardom.

EELKE KLEIJN REVEALS STUNNING THIRD ARTIST ALBUM: ‘Moments Of Clarity’

Inspiring Dutch producer Eelke Kleijn proudly presents his third stunning album: ‘Moments Of Clarity’. Drawing on his career DJing on dancefloors around the world as well as his work as a film & TV composer and his background playing piano, guitar and bass, it effortlessly blends club sounds with the melodic integrity required for home listening.

Listen to Eelke Kleijn – Moments Of Clarity

“’Moments Of Clarity’ is about those rare moments where everything seems to come together and fall into place”, he explains. “You find them in all aspects of life, not just in music. They don’t come along often, but when they do I always treasure them. Every track on the album finds its origin in one of those moments.” Clarity is indeed the watchword here, both in terms of his refined production aesthetic and the composition of the tracks themselves. Every element is felt in precise detail. Nothing is wasted, nor overcooked.

‘Maschine 1.0’ kicks off in classic Eelke Kleijn fashion, with graceful orchestral strings gliding over a delicate, atmospheric groove, building to a dazzling melodic synth solo. ‘Lost Souls’ takes a more direct approach, with Ost’s sublime vocals and dulcet pianos pitched against brooding, driving bass tones. ‘1,000 Lights’—originally composed as part of a huge drone installation at Burning Man—provides a dreamy respite with its twinkling pianos and beatless beauty.

‘The Calling’ is a joyous slice of dancefloor gold, with subtle melodic elements and pleasing bass throbs cut through with a bold lead line. ‘Drive’ takes its cues from classic Italo disco with its pleasingly arpeggiated bass and synth combos, making for a fist-pumping, uplifting ride. ‘Glass Waves’ provides a mesmerizing, cinematic interlude that makes Kleijn’s prowess as a film and TV composer incredibly clear, while the brooding low end and beautiful scales of ‘Punta Cana’ take things into a darker direction.

‘De Orde Van De Nacht (Part 2)’ is a continuation of the 2017 original, and is a wonderfully atmospheric breakbeat roller with soaring pads and chord progressions, while ‘Mojo’s Tale’ is a slinky slice of progressive house driven by an elastic, funk-fueled bassline. ‘Maschine 2.0’ increases the intensity of the album to its most potent peak, with rasping techno synth rhythms and taut percussion driving this hard-edge track forward like a juggernaut. It’s no surprise that it has been a huge track in Solomun’s sets in recent months. The title track is another sumptuous breakbeat number, with the album’s most stunning string section working its way over a spacious, glacial arrangement. ‘René’s shimmering, trancey tones make for a perfect ambient closer to round off this magical record.

The upcoming prospect of his new live/DJ hybrid shows is incredibly exciting, with the music on this superb record perfectly suited for dynamic recreations with a degree of spontaneity. Sophisticated, accomplished and diverse, it represents everything that’s so compelling about this continually flourishing artist.

MORGAN PAGE’S ‘THE LONGEST ROAD’ 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY: EP01

NCLUDES DEADMAU5, VICETONE & STEFF DA CAMPO REMIXES

Morgan Page’s 2008 single ‘The Longest Road’, featuring Lissie’s now iconic vocal is, without doubt, one of the most important records in modern US electronic music, a cut so sweeping and sublime that it captured the imaginations and hearts of a new generation of clubbers and spearheaded one of the biggest cultural youth movements in the history of the United States.

Listen to Morgan Page – The Longest Road (Part One)

Today, Page celebrates both the track and its impact on the dance music scene and his career by releasing the first of three special edition remix packs of ‘The Longest Road’ which will combine to form a 10th anniversary compilation album. The first ‘The Longest Road’ EP features three remixes – a brand new remix from Steff Da Campo, the 2012 bootleg remix from Vicetone now released officially for the first time, and  the song’s most famous edition, the original 2008 Deadmau5 remix.

Nominated for a GRAMMY for ‘Best Remixed Recording, Non Classical’, the Deadmau5 remix heralded the breakthrough of dance music into the mainstream American consciousness. Hypnotic, relentless and masterfully giving Lissie’s beautiful vocal room to stretch, breathe and soar across the production with spine-tingly effectiveness, it was, and still is, one of the most celebrated remixes in US electronic music.

In 2012, Dutch duo Vicetone released a bootleg remix of ‘The Longest Road’. With its melodic big room twist, sweeping synths, euphoric vocal and driving bass, it swiftly became one of the biggest white label tracks to feature across festival and club sets from countless DJs around the world. Now with the release of the 10th anniversary remixes and to the delight of fans, the duo will see their edit as a full, official release.

Steff Da Campo, a rising Dutch star with a growing number of Beatport #1s under his belt (‘Out Of My Mind’ [Axtone], ‘Make Me Feel’ [Hexagon]), turns in a lush Future House cut of the single, shifting between warm piano house elements and twitching, squelching bass FX, pulling them together with absolute precision for a remix that will do just as well on playlists as it will on the dance floor.

With a slew of new music coming on Armada Music stretching far into 2019, it’s clear that Page remains as vital and as relevant today as he was a decade ago, continuing to release music that inspires another new generation of music producers and fans alike.
